Percussionist, graduated by ESMAE (BA & MA) with Miquel Bernat, Manuel Campos and
Nuno Aroso as tutors. Currently, he is attending a Phd Program in Musical Arts at FCSH/ UNL. He is interested in the mediation between composer and performer during the creative processes, specifically in the creation of new music for solo percussion from Portuguese composers. He won a PhD grant from Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
He is a member of
Drumming Percussion Group since 2004, a group founded in 1999, and since then being one of the most important collectives of the genre vocation for contemporary music. With this group, he has an active role as an interpreter and mediator in the collaboration with composers in the creation of new works. With DGP, he premiered dozens of works by composers of various nationalities, and he participated on the recording of seven monographic CDs dedicated to the work for percussion of the registered composers, and participated in two others not signed by the group.
He is a member of
Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble, and collaborates regularly with Sonoscopia Associação. He also works with
Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música, Casa da Musica Choir,
Remix Ensemble,
Gulbenkian Orchestra, among others.
He joined the European Union Youth Orchestra (2006-2009) where he worked with Vladimir Ashkenazy, Rainer Seeguers (Berliner Philharmoniker's Timpani) and Simon Carrington (London Philharmonic Orchestra Timpani).
Supernova Ensemble is his most recent project, of which he is artistic director, together with the composer José Alberto Gomes, where he also performs. Supernova is a project incubated at artist-in-residence programme of Circular - Associação Cultural, and was created to meet an international community dedicated to innovative music in performance, Sound Art and New Media contexts, with a strong focus on collaborative work, and is composed by artists from diverse backgrounds and orientations.
He has been developing several other projects and collaborations, to highlight the most recent work that he is developing as resident artist of the COPRAXIS Ectopia project at i3S (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health). In this project he has developed a work (
And it keeps going or the never-ending song of life) of exploration and creation between art and science, more specifically with the group Epithelial Polarity & Cell Division of the researcher and group leader Eurico Morais de Sá.
As a soloist, he developed at the request of the artistic director of Festival Música Viva,
Miguel Azguime, the solo project “Electric Box” in 2016. This is a project entirely dedicated to disseminating Portuguese percussion music for percussion solo inside and outside the country, such as one of his performances at the Darmstadt Summer Course in July 2018. In this same year, he gets support from Criatório (support platform for artistic creation from Câmara do Porto) to create a new Solo project:
DiRe-SoNo, a project that aimed creating new music that involves in mediation a collective of five composers with the performer.
DiRe-SoNo project also gets founding from DGArtes for circulation throughout the national territory.
He is a researcher at the Research Group on Contemporary Music at CESEM, where he is particularly interested in the mediation between composer and performer in the creation of new music for percussion.
He is a professor (guest assistant) at University of Aveiro and University of Minho.
