Conver(say)tions commissioned by The California EAR Unit is a conversation without purposes other than itself! It was written for the core setup of the ensemble but using as the only percussion instrument an electronic mallet keyboard. This piece falls within my works where the concept of “speech as music / music as speech” is at the core of the composition, sustained itself on vocal properties. More than an actual conversation, this piece is about conversions between vocal spectral characteristics, thus its title Conver(say)tions, and the implications of those conversions both for the general form and the instrumental piano and violin writing. The percussion is the voice, which for instance is either my own voice or transformed from it.
