Hugo Vasco Reis (Lisbon, 1981) is a composer, guitarist (Portuguese guitar) and engineer (civil).

As a guitarist he studied at the Porto Jazz School, at the Conservatory of Music of Porto and took private classes with Pedro Caldeira Cabral.

As a composer he studied at the ESML – Lisbon Music College, with Sérgio Azevedo, Luís Tinoco and António Pinho Vargas, where he graduated from composition. He had private classes and masterclasses with João Heitor-Rigaud (Portugal), Alicia Terzian (Argentina), Achim Christian Bornhoeft (Austria), Luigi Abbate (Italy), Ivan Moody (United Kingdom), Åke Parmerud (Sweden), Hans Tutschku (Germany/USA), Chaya Czernowin (Israel), Zygmunt Krauze (Poland), Toshio Hosokawa (Japan) and Justė Janulytė (Lithuania).

His catalog contains works for orchestra (2), chamber music (14), solo instruments (16) and electroacoustic (7), being performed in several concert halls (Portugal, USA, Germany, Austria, United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Estonia, Poland, India and Mozambique) and awarded/selected in several composition competitions [Matera Intermedia Festival (Matera, Italy), The Future Blend Project (Warwick, UK), NGCS (Boston, USA), Folefest (Lisbon, Portugal), Festival Criasons (Lisbon, Portugal), Portuguese Association of Composers (Lisbon, Portugal), International Society for Contemporary Music – World Music Days 2019 (Tallinn, Estonia) and Risuonanze 2018 (Udinne, Italy)].

He has edited five monographic albums: Poema Anacrónico (2013), Metamorphosis and Resonances (2017) (nomination SPA | 2017 – Best Classical Music Work), I am (k)not (2018), O Espaço da Sombra (2018) (nomination SPA | 2018 – Best Classical Music Work) and Chamber Music I (2019), which include his compositions, being supported in all by the Ministry of Culture of Portugal, DGArtes, Antena 2 (Portuguese classical radio) and Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.

He made artistic residencies in the Artist in Residence Program – Bull’s Eye, by the fine artist Rui Soares Costa and at the O’culto da Ajuda, run by the composer Miguel Azguime. His scores are edited by MIC.PT – Portuguese Music Research & Information Center.
