Program Notes
Composed between 2003 and 2006, "Script" is a mirror of my experience as "composer in research" at French institute IRCAM.
The sound of a bass-marimba is constantly transformed, in real time, being approached to other percussive models - becoming a sort of electronic vibraphone, or a bell set, or even a harp. The basic idea in this piece is that every sound is "composed": no timber appears as in its original nature. Spectra are permanently distorted.
Both the live transformations and the pre-recorded parts of the polyphony use the same timbers, as they also use the some harmonic and rhythmic elements.
Formally, the last part - "Post Scriptum" - is a progressive lecture of a score with different levels of parenthesis. As the interpreter progresses in his reading, he introduces a new level, until he has achieved the entire "meaning" of the score. Sort of an open form within a closed path.
"Script" is dedicated to my son Mateus Amaral.
