Dégradé is a French term used to describe a gradual shift from one colour to another. This work for quintet is based on a shift of compositional focus from figure to sound. In the beginning, the shapes of melodic figuration take prominence. Then, gradually, harmonic colour and overall sonic shape take over. One can also hear these ‘gradations’, these dégradés, on a smaller scale.
