A Walk in the Countryside, for flute, was commissioned by ensemble recherche for their flautist at the time, Martin Fahlenbock. The piece started as I imagined experiencing a surrounding countryside landscape. This kind of landscape is, in many ways, the opposite of a narrative: it is typically action-free. But because experience (being) involves time, even landscapes feature events that follow each other. The sounds of these virtual events can therefore exist independently or in relation to one another, thus creating an interplay between event and memory. That is to say that a soundscape can, in effect, turn into a composition. As the piece progresses, evocative sounds gradually turn into musical gestures.
