Sílvia Cancela studied at the Nadia et Lili Boulanger Conservatoire, in Paris IX. She holds a bachelor’s degree, concluded at the Lisbon School of Music (ESML), and a master’s degree in Music Teaching from the Portuguese Catholic University, finalised with the dissertation “The musical discourse and contemporary techniques(s) in the pedagogy of flute: a contribution to a catalogue of works for the 6th, 7th and 8th grade”.
Sílvia Cancela was a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Cascais and Oeiras as the first flute and soloist (2001-2010). She worked with the Orchestre de Flûte Français de Pierre-Yves Artaud, participating in the festivals: Biennale de Zagreb (Croatia) and Cap à l'Est (Slovakia). She has also collaborated with the Paris Ensemble Philarmonique, the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, and the Gulbenkian Orchestra.
From 2013 to 2017, she was an assistant to the “Xiquitsi” Project in Mozambique, giving classes, workshops, and concerts.
Since 2011, she has been a member of the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble, a group with which she has recorded several CDs.
She teaches Transverse Flute and Chamber Music at the Escola Profissional Artística do Alto Minho, Academia de Música de Viana do Castelo and Escola de Música Guilhermina Suggia.
She is a member of the European Chamber Music Teachers Association.
