Born in Alcácer do Sal. His birth date is not yet established with certainty: according to some sources he was born in 1889, but other sources point to 1992.
His career was dedicated mostly to writing operas as the founder of the modern portuguese opera and guardian of the portuguese soul, as he considered himself. In 1934 he founded the Opera National Action (Acção Nacional de Ópera), a semi-official organization of the regime, which contributed mostly to the promotion of Coelho’s own work.
In 1940 his opera D. João IV celebrated the reopening of the opera venue São Carlos Theatre, simultaneously with the Portuguese World Exhibition.
From 1947 to 1969, under the direction of José Figueiredo – a man who earned Salazar’s trust, the São Carlos Theatre witnessed no less than 15 of Coelho’s productions.
