 Born on the 15th February, 1962, Mirandela. Portuguese composer of mostly orchestral, chamber, choral, and vocal works that have been performed in the Americas, Europe and elsewhere. Eurico Carrapatoso studied history at the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto and there earned a degree in 1985. He then studied composition with José Luís Borges Coelho from 1985-87 and studied fugue with Cândido Lima at the Conservatório de Música de Lisboa in 1987-88. He studied composition with Constança Capdeville at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa from 1988-91 and with Jorge Peixinho there from 1991-93, where he graduated with the highest honors. Among his honors are the Cantonigròs Prize (Barcelona, 1995), the Lopes-Graça Prize from the city of Tomar (1998-99) and the Francisco de Lacerda Prize (1999, for Mare nostrum et mare vostrum and Raios de Extinta Luz). In addition, his works have represented Portugal twice at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers (1998-99). His works have been performed throughout Portugal, as well as in China, France and the USA, and he has received commissions from numerous theatres, including the Teatro Aberto and the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, as well as the Casa da Música do Porto and the Orquestra Nacional do Porto. One of his more recent works, "A morte de Luís II da Baviera" (2010), musical drama in one scene and one act, on the text of Bernardo Soares (adapted by João Botelho), for soprano, mezzo-soprano, choir and orchestra, was commissioned by ArDeFilmes and included in "The Film of Disquiet" by João Botelho. In November 2012 Eurico Carrapatoso will premiere a new work for orchestra commissioned by the Guimarães 2012 - European Capital of Culture. He has taught composition (and also social and economic history) at several institutions, including the Escola de Música in Porto and the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa. He has taught analysis and compositional techniques at the Academia de Amadores de Música and the Conservatório de Música since 1989 and analysis at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon since 1998. In May 2001 the Historic Society of Portuguese Independence distinguished Eurico Carrapatoso with the Award of National Identity. On June 10th 2004 the Portuguese President decorated him with the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator and last year the Secretariado Nacional da Pastoral da Cultura distinguished him with the Árvore da Vida - Padre Manuel Antunes Award. He is married to the soprano Angélica Neto.
