After his studies at the Lisbon Conservatoire, Vianna da Motta went to Germany, where he studied with Franz Liszt, among others. He lived in Berlin and launched from there his international career as a piano player. During the I World War he went to Geneva, where he was a teacher at the Conservatoire. In 1918 he was designated Director of the Lisbon Conservatoire. Along with Luís de Freitas Branco, Vianna da Motta thought out the reform of the Artistic Education, which took place in 1919 and in 1917 they founded the Lisbon Concert Society.
