Eduardo Luís Patriarca In Focus on the MIC.PT in May
In May the MIC.PT In Focus section is dedicated to the work of Eduardo Luís Patriarca, composer (published by the MIC.PT), who in 2020 celebrates his 50th anniversary. Eduardo Luís Patriarca is connected with the spectral school. In his artistic production he's inspired by Buddhist reflection, as well as Zen and Taoist philosophy. In the process of his education he had the opportunity to work with Álvaro Salazar, António Pinho Vargas, Cândido Lima, Emmanuel Nunes and Jorge Peixinho (among various other Portuguese and foreign composers). Presently, his music is being regularly performed in Portugal and abroad.
Thus writes Virgílio Melo in the New Music Review Lounge: "It's quite common to associate the term serial to «sawtooth» melodies and lack of repetition, the post-modern to referential juxtaposition of various pastiches, and so on. In the case of Eduardo Patriarca such generalisations seem slippery and counterproductive. All the more, since the composer has always admitted being influenced by the spectral aesthetics, which is usually connoted with a discourse of slow evolution and interleaving, occasionally stimulated by shocks as if they were transcriptions of a sonic spectrum. Now, there's nothing more inadequate than to apply such images to describe the work of Patriarca..."

MIC.PT Highlights
1st on-line Meeting · Portuguese Music Perspectives – Network Cooperation

The 1st on-line Meeting · Portuguese Music PerspectivesNetwork Cooperation, organised by the MIC.PT, will take place on May 29. The Meeting's objective is to get together formal and informal Portuguese entities (organisations, associations, education and research centres, orchestras, instrumental and vocal ensembles, ...), dedicated to the dissemination of Invention and Research Music in Portugal. The aim of organising this Meeting is to unanimously communicate to the public agents responsible for creating the programming and support distribution rules, the priceless value which Invention and Research Music and its composers constitute within the cultural identity of Portugal. This event is focused on establishing a platform of exchange of knowledge on the various participating entities (their activities and strategies) and on analysing and debating their problems, in order to create a mutual strategy. This plan will indicate solutions allowing for a mid-term improvement of the situation of Invention and Research Music and its composers in Portugal. The Meeting was initially planned to integrate the Música Viva 2020 Festival. However, taking into consideration the rules of social distancing resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, the organisers have decided to carry out this Meeting on-line. It will be followed with a "face-to-face" event when the global situation improves.

#MúsicaEmCasa (#MusicAtHome) · Portuguese musicians on-line · Antena 2 Initiative

In April the >> Antena 2 (Portuguese national broadcaster) has released an initiative, #MúsicaEmCasa (#MusicAtHome), directed to Portuguese musicians (composers, soloists, ensembles, conductors) and to their audiences, during the time of social distancing. It's a platform for sharing on-line sites (links to YouTube, SoundCloud channels, ...), where the artists upload concerts and diverse music contents. "The days of confinement, resulting from the state of emergency, have changed music and culture consumption by the Portuguese" – says João Almeida, >> Antena 2 director. And he continues: "Not being able to go to performance venues, the citizens have started looking for digital alternatives. The culture institutions have multiplied the on-line offers, trying to bridge this gap and facilitating the access to culture. On its part, the community of Portuguese musicians has suffered from numerous cancellations of live performances, for being incompatible with the social distancing strategy necessary to fight against the Covid-19.
