On the 12th of June 2006 I was informed by a colleague: “Ligeti is dead”. At that time I had started making some sketches for an orchestral piece where I was trying (as it has been recurrent in my work) to take advantage of some musical material from others of my pieces.
After such sad news I decided to direct this orchestral moment as a small homage to the composer who, in an indirect way, has influenced my work the most during my learning process.
This piece is divided into 4 sections (A B B’ C). Section A recovers the embryonic idea of my piece ...quasi un lamento..., here extended and with a distinctive harmonic field.
Sections B and B’ touch on symmetric harmonic fields presented in a static way where the importance of the timbre is crucial. Section C revisits the third movement of my 5 Bagatelles using a more complex orchestration.
György Ligeti’s influence is intermittently clear in this piece. Above all and as I have referred to previously, my aim was through what I humbly consider my musical language, make a homage to this great figure of twentieth century music.
