Gestures II: conversation about a contour is the continuation of the idea of Gestures I but with specified instruments, in this case clarinet, piano and two percussionists. Gestures I was written for COMA in my first year at the Royal Academy of Music and it has no pitches written or any specified instruments.
Gestures II: conversations about a contour was commissioned by the Ensemble JER, which is a group that plays classical music on toy instruments. I was one of the elements of this ensemble during the year previous to studying in London. Now I realise the importance for my musical writing of having belonged to this group: the experiences we made in terms of timbre while playing classical pieces allowed me to develop my music towards a more detailed use of the colours of the instruments.
