This music was composed at the request of Nuno Silva (clarinet) and Sally Dean (oboe), to integrate the repertoire of their quintet; it is dedicated to them, with sincere admiration for their excellent level.

Wounded Serenade
During my childhood in Brazil, I see serenades (named “serestas”) made with guitarists, flutists, clarinetists, singers, who formed spontaneous and brief groups, according to the meetings that took place at the houses of friends during the weekend nights.
I.
Song: Diffused presence, lines almost only as intention; melody in states of will or has been, fading promises: music that is not enough, incomplete feelings, some anguish – somewhat free:
This Song is the Perfume of a Serenade to Begin.
II.
Wounded Serenade: the essence of lyricism was in “Serestas” when I found them – the melodies marked me, the indescribable strength of their expression on those Brazilian nights. This is my “serestial” evocation, where the sounds of life already cloud the memory of melodies; it is that quasi-Seresta that I composed at the age of fifty, the one that was injured, when Time took the last of my Seresta players – my uncle Bayard Umbuzeiro, a popular guitarist.
