(des)Integrasons was written for a workshop given by the Exaudi Vocal Ensemble at the University of Birmingham in February of 2014. It is a further exploration of the deconstruction of the Portuguese accent of S. Miguel Island and the abstraction of traditional songs into a new context. The title itself is a play on words. The correct word in Portuguese would be desintegrações (desintegrations). By replacing the last syllable “ções” by “sons” (meaning sounds) we will have the homophone correspondence to how the regional accent from S. Miguel would sound. This idea was borrowed from a great friend, composer Nuno Estrela, also from S. Miguel, who called one of his pieces emosons (emoções – translated to emotions mean emosounds). Thus, it implies a dual intent explored in the piece: the disintegrations of the original material and its integration into another context.
