FERNANDO C. LAPA IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN JULY
In July the MIC.PT In Focus and Dossier no. 14 (published in the context of the digital editions’ series: Dossiers . Portuguese Composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries) are dedicated to Fernando C. Lapa - prolific composer, for whom artistic freedom and independence are some of the most important aspects in music creation.
Born in 1950 in Vila Real, Fernando C. Lapa studied music at the Music Conservatoire in Porto, where he graduated from the Composition Superior Course in the class led by Cândido Lima. During his career he was Composition and Orchestration professor (among other disciplines) at various schools, including the Music Conservatoire in Porto as well as the Superior School of Music and Performance Arts in the same city. Having a strong connection with choral music, Fernando C. Lapa conducted the Academic Choir at the Minho University during 16 years.
In the last three decades the composer has created a vast work, encompassing concertos, symphonic and choral-symphonic repertoire, operas, chamber music, works for solo instruments as well as soundtracks for cinema and theatre. Many of them are regularly performed at concerts both in Portugal and abroad.
How did Fernando C. Lapa discover the universe of composition? What is the role of literature and poetry in his work? How does he understand the term “avant-garde”? What is his opinion on Portuguese contemporary music? You’ll find the answer to these and other questions in our July In Focus section, dedicated to this composer published by the MIC.PT, whose piece a menina, a lua e o mar inspired in the literature by Mia Couto has been recently premiered, and who is currently preparing his new opera Mátria with libretto by Eduarda Freitas based on Miguel Torga’s work.
