VÍTOR RUA IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN JANUARY
Vítor Rua, composer published by the MIC.PT, has always followed his own path - he started his activity with rock music, gradually getting closer to the new music circles. In 1982 he met Jorge Lima Barreto, whose influence was decisive for the change in his music direction - together they created the music ensemble Telectu. Here Vítor Rua developed his multifaceted talent as guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and inventor of prototypes.
Vítor Rua is interested in all music styles that nowadays are available to composers - he is influenced by a “meta-typology”, where all his music experiences are reunited in the genre: compositions on meta-idiomatic improvisations. It is quite typical for Vítor Rua to resort in his work to irony, with the aim to deconstruct older music forms and to create commentaries on the present times. The soprano Ana Ester Neves, saxophonist Daniel Kientzy, trombonist Giancarlo Schiaffini, pianist John Tilbury and recorder players Kathryn Bennetts and Peter Bowman are some of the musicians who have performed Vítor Rua’s works at concerts, as well as at national and international festivals.
What does Vítor Rua thinks of the present situation in Portuguese music? What is unique to his creative process? How does he defines the relations between science and music?… You will find the answers to these and other questions in the MIC.PT questionnaire, which this month is published on-line in the In Focus section and in the Dossier no. 11 belonging to our series series – Dossiers . Portuguese Composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries.
