RICARDO RIBEIRO IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN SEPTEMBER
In September on the MIC.PT the In Focus and the Dossier no. 9 published in the context of the series of digital editions, Dossiers . Portuguese Composers of the 20th and 21st Centuries, are dedicated to Ricardo Ribeiro. Presently, this Portuguese composer has various ongoing new works. In May his piece Asper for five instruments was premiered in the context of the Música Viva Festival 2016 where the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble was conducted by Petter Sundkvist. Ricardo Ribeiro was born in Aveiro in 1971 where he attended the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory. Later he studied Composition at the Lisbon Superior School of Music. He participated in various courses conducted by composers, such as Magnus Lindberg, Philippe Manoury, Salvatore Sciarrino, Jonathan Harvey, as well as Franco Donatoni and Tristan Murail, who had a decisive impact on his music. Subsequently Ricardo Ribeiro followed the composition and music research studies with Emmanuel Nunes in Paris who then had the strongest influence on his work. And then… the composer passed seven years without composing, within a process of “unlearning” as he calls it. Ricardo Ribeiro needed these seven years to find new ways for writing and conceiving music, to find his own voice. This process led to the decision to withdraw many of his past works from his catalogue. Presently, supervised by Antoine Bonnet, the composer is preparing at the Rennes II University in France a Doctoral thesis under the subject, Dimensions complémentaires constitutives du temps. It follows the Master’s Degree in Esthétique et Pratique des Arts obtained with the same tutor. What were the motives for the creative break in Ricardo Ribeiro’s path? How does he face music and composition at present? The composer responds to these and other questions in the interview given to MIC.PT in 2011, and which this September is published in the In Focus section as well as in the MIC.PT Dossier no. 9.
