FILIPE DE SOUSA In Focus on the MIC.PT in MARCH

Filipe de Sousa (1927-2006) died ten years ago. An occasion to remember and help to discover the man and the artist he was.

Best known as a pianist and composer, Filipe de Sousa is a very significant figure in the Portuguese musical life in the second half of the twentieth century.
Besides being a promoter of music of his time as an interpreter, Filipe de Sousa has been an active composer since the late 40s, with a work that includes a lot of chamber music, including many compositions of songs for voice and piano, and works for orchestra and string orchestra, experimental compositions for film and electroacoustic pieces. Influenced early in his career as a composer by Bartók and especially Hindemith, Filipe de Sousa developed a personal style and his own aesthetic, with a constant curiosity for new music of its time, but keeping some reserves and distances to the avant-garde musical movements.

Born in Maputo, the composer lived most of his life in Lisbon. Filipe de Sousa was also conductor, researcher and contributed to the study and dissemination of Portuguese music of the eighteenth century, supporting Portuguese music editing. Man of vast culture, he had diversified activity, including interpretation, creation and musical research, with a striking and constant presence in the Portuguese musical and cultural life.
