SOFIA SOUSA ROCHA IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN DECEMBER
The last In Focus this year is dedicated to Sofia Sousa Rocha (1986), composer published by the MIC.PT, who at the age of eleven entered the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory in Braga. In 2004 she enrolled in the Composition Course at the Lisbon Superior School of Music where she made her Master’s Degree under the supervision of António Pinho Vargas. Presently she is professor at the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatory in Braga and Companhia da Música. “...one of the most important moments in my path were the two Master’s Degree years”, says Sofia Sousa Rocha in the MIC.PT Questionnaire/Interview, published in our In Focus section this month. "This Artistic Project subordinated to the theme, Reflections on the Creative Process, (…) led to a more profound reflection of my way of writing, assuming an almost diagnostic character”.
Sofia Sousa Rocha had works commissioned by the Antena 2 for the Young Musicians Award 2008, by the Alcobaça Music Festival in 2009 and in 2013 by the Leiria Music Festival. She participated in the 2nd Score Reading Atelier of the Algarve Orchestra with the piece Papagaio sem penas, in the 7th Workshop for Young Composers by the Gulbenkian Orchestra with the piece Um e um, and in the Concerts of the Ricercare Choir and the Lisbon Sinfonietta dedicated to young Portuguese composers. In March 2012 she presented her mini-opera Inês morre at the São Carlos National Theatre, as part of the cycle Love-Betrayal-Death (Amor-Traição-Morte). In 2014, in response to a commission by the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble, Sofia Sousa Rocha composed a music theatre piece based on a poem by José Saramago, which will be premiered by the Sond’Ar-te on December 15 at 9h30 p.m. at O’culto da Ajuda in Lisbon.

This repertoire will also include a piece by the Spanish composer, José Manuél López López (Haikus del Mar). In the framework of this concert, supported by the Arte no Tempo association and mpmp (Patrimonial Movement for Portuguese Music), Drumming - Percussion Group will also present a CD that assembles the integral work for percussion by António Chagas Rosa; the new edition is released under the mpmp label.
Igor Silva Awarded at the GMCL/Jorge Peixinho Competition
The jury of the 2nd International GMCL/Jorge Peixinho Competition Competition, composed of two composers published by the MIC.PT, Clotilde Rosa and João Madureira, as well as by Ivan Fedele, Gerhard Staebler and Jorge Sá Machado, decided to grant the following awards: to Igor C. Silva, composer published by the MIC.PT, the 1st Prize in the B Category for the work Blood Ink (2015), and to João Quinteiro Lopes the 1st Prize in the A Category for the piece Thánatos (2015). The jury also distinguished two other pieces by Eduardo Serrano (Columbia) and Gabriel Cosmi (Italy). The winning works will be presented by the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group conducted by Vasco Azevedo, on December 3 and 4 and the Electricity Museum in Lisbon and the Joaquim d'Almeida Cinema-Theatre in Montijo. The programme will also include the work Leves Véus Velam (1981) by Jorge Peixinho, composer published by the MIC.PT.
João Pedro Oliveira's Works at International Events
Two works by João Pedro Oliveira for electronics and video, 'Aphâr and Et Ignis Involvens, have been chosen for various international events (festivals and competitions), dedicated to sound and visual art. In this sense, the piece 'Aphâr, created by this composer published by the MIC.PT in 2007, was chosen for the Synchresis P15 - XXII Festival Internacional de Arte Sonoro y Música Electroacústica Punto de Encuentro, taking place between November and December in Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla, Granada and the Canaries; for the IndieFest Film Awards and Best Shorts Competition (La Jolla, California); for the Legends of Hollywood Film Festival (Los Angeles); as well as for the Russian International Film Festival (Sevastopol). Regarding the piece Et Ignis Involvens (2005), it will be presented in the context of the 7th edition of the Espacio Enter Festival (December 4-13, the Canaries) and at the MUSLAB 2015 in Mexico (December 5-26).
Premiere of Work by Helder GonçalveS
On December 12 at 9h30 p.m. at the Contemporary Culture Centre in Castelo Branco, the João Roiz Ensemble and Marina Pacheco (soprano) will premiere three new works: a commission to Helder Gonçalves, composer published by the MIC.PT; as well as two other commissions to Nuno Côrte-Real and Cesar Viana. The repertoire of this event entitled Palavras nossas (Our Words), will also include pieces by Jorge Croner de Vasconcelos, João Pedro Delgado, Cláudio Carneyro e Luiz Costa. Here, "within a path on Portuguese music, its aesthetic relations and connection with literature" the musicians propose "a reflection on the artistic immanences of the Portuguese territory", through the texts by João Roiz from Castelo Branco and António Salvado (used in the new, premiered works), in addition to "returning" to the audience pieces by Cláudio Carneyro and Croner de Vasconcelos, long forgotten and based on Cantiga Partindo-se.
Work by Miguel Azguime in the USA
De Fond en Comble (2014) for voice and electronics by Miguel Azguime, composer published by the MIC.PT, is one of the pieces making part of the recital, The Electric Voice, by the bass-baritone Nicholas Isherwood. This programme, which also includes works by David Felder, Michael Norris, Jean Claude Risset and Isaac Schankler, will be presented on December 4 at the Baird Recital Hall of the University at Buffalo in the United States. The American composer and singer presently residing in Europe, Nicholas Isherwood is a kind of human "container" joining "artistic spirits" from diverse origins. The Electric Voice is an explosive, provocative, ironic and multidimensional recital, whose programme unites composers and electronic music studios from the world over, including the United States, New Zealand, France and Portugal. For this project every invited composer was asked to create a piece for voice and electronics.
new works premiered by the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble
On December 15 and 16 at the O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon, and on December 17 at the Teatro da Rainha in Caldas da Rainha (Portugal), the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble conducted by Pedro Neves will perform premieres of works written by three composers published by the MIC.PT in response to the commission by the Sond'Ar-te. The works are: Sonho (2015) by Daniel Martinho with poem by Fernando Pessoa, Ao Desconcerto do Mundo (2015) by Ângela da Ponte with poem by Luís Vaz de Camões, Fala do velho do Restelo ao astronauta (2015) by Sofia Sousa Rocha with poem by José Saramago. The programme of these performances entitled Des-Concerto is directed not only to schools but also to an audience of all ages. Here, Ágata Mandillo and Miguel Azguime (composer published by the MIC.PT) participate as narrators, and the repertoire also includes the piece Quando eu nasci (When I was born) with story by Isabel Martins, composed in 2011 by Pedro Rebelo, another composer whose scores are published by the MIC.PT. Diz-Concerto is a project by the Sond'Ar-te Electric Ensemble, continuing the tradition of music creation for the young, represented for example by Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. In Diz-Concerto the union of the music by young Portuguese composers with the words by some of the most emblematic Portuguese authors, creates a new quality of listening, where the imagination captivated by the acoustic and electronic sounds wanders to the taste of every story and poem.
