EDUARDO LUÍS PATRIARCA IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN JULY
In August 2014 Eduardo Luís Patriarca joined the composers published by the MIC.PT and recently various of his works have been premiered throughout Portugal. This summer he is the composer In Focus who answered to the MIC.PT Questionnaire/Interview published on our website in July.
Eduardo Patriarca was born in 1970 in Porto. Additionally to his studies at the Superior Music Schools in Porto and Lisbon, he had the opportunity to work with Jorge Peixinho and to participate in seminars by Emmanuel Nunes, Wilfred Jentzsch, Gerhard Staebler, António de Sousa Dias, Leo Brouwer and Philippe Hurel. His music is regularly performed in Portugal and abroad. In 2006 he participated in the conference dedicated to Music and Mathematics co-organized by the Science Faculty of the Porto University and Casa da Música. There he made a presentation on fractals and spectral music. Two years later he dedicated to this subject his Master's Degree in Composition, under Isabel Soveral's guidance at the Aveiro University.
Thus wrote Virgílio Melo in January 2012 at the New Music Review Lounge: "(...)it is quite common to associate the term serial to «sawtooth» melodies and lack of repetition, the post-modern to referential juxtaposition of various pastiches, and so on. In the case of (...) Eduardo Patriarca such generalizations seem as slippery and counterproductive, all the more, since the composer has always affirmed himself being influenced by spectral aesthetics, which is usually connoted with a discourse of slow evolution and interleaving, occasionally stimulated by shocks as if they were transcriptions of a sound spectrum with the evolution of its harmonics and attack transients. Now, there is nothing more inadequate than to apply such images to describe the work of Patriarca..."
