HUGO RIBEIRO "IN FOCUS" ON MIC.PT IN JUNE
In June the mic.pt In Focus section is dedicated to Hugo Ribeiro, composer who this month celebrates his 30th anniversary. Born in Lisbon, he studied music at the D. Dinis Conservatoire of Music in Odivelas, at the Lisbon Superior School of Music as well as at the Royal Academy of Music and the Canterbury Christ Church University where recently he has defended his doctoral thesis. Presently he is studying orchestra direction with the conductor Alexis Hauser in Montreal, after having attended private lessons with Peter Stark in London. Among his recent works one should highlight the composition of the opera "Os mortos viajam de metro", with libretto by Armando Nascimento Rosa and staging by Paulo Matos. It was premiered at the São Luiz Theatre in Lisbon in April 2010. His catalogue of works includes solo works, chamber music for different sets, orchestral pieces, two operas as well as electroacoustic and choral music. If on the one hand every Hugo Ribeiro's piece presents a distinct compositional problem exploring rhythm, timbre, instrumentation or contrasts between the movements, on the other, the composer gives importance to the problems of symmetry both in constructing the intervals and chords as well as in the formal plan of his music. "I am an assumed fan of literature. I like poetry, words, languages, linguistics (…). I enjoy the way in which words taken from their original contexts can have various meanings. I try to translate this idea into musical terms: what would be the impact of a musical gesture if taken away from its original formal context", tells us Hugo Ribeiro in the Questionnaire / Interview, which this month is published in the In Focus.

Arte Eletroacústica is a radio programme presented, directed and produced by Miso Music Portugal and the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre for the Antena 2 National Radio, in conjunction with the Ars Acustica group, of the European Broadcasting Union. Every month, fortnightly on Saturdays at 1 a.m., Arte Eletroacústica presents to its listeners an art which constitutes the pulse of the future, making use of new technologies, interactivity and multimedia, giving them uncommon auditory sensations and letting them rediscover the radio as a platform for new aesthetic experiences.

The latest programmes are already available on-line:
>> May 11 - Gilles Gobeil - Cinema for the Ears
>> May 25 - François Bayle - Electroacoustic Music
