Opus Ensemble was formed in August of 1980 by the oboist and conductor Bruno Pizzamiglio, the violist Ana Bela Chaves, the piano player Olga Prats and the double bassist Alejandro Erlich-Oliva.
Throughout their career, Opus Ensemble has been awarded the Critics Award (1982 and 1984), the Golden Se7e (1983), the Nova Gente Trophy (1983, 1986 and 1987), the Renascença Radio Record Award (1988), the Bordalo Award - Press Association (1993) and the Nova Gente Honor Diploma (1994).
Being a member of UNESCO's Portuguese Council for Music since 1989, Opus Ensemble is presently part of the directive boards of that institution. The international career of the group has led them to Paris, Toulouse, Luxembourg, London, Madrid, Huelva, Warsaw, Krakow, New York, Boston, Newport, Washington, Tokyo, Osaka, Macao, Beijing, Seul, Bangkok, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires and Montevideo, where their concerts were unanimously well received by the critics.
Composers such as Fernando Lopes-Graça, Joly Braga Santos, Fernando Corrêa de Oliveira, Jorge Peixinho, Constança Capdeville, António Pinho Vargas, António Victorino d’Almeida and Laurent Filipe (Portugal); Ramón Barce and José Luis Turina (Spain); Gerardo Gandini, Celina Kohan, Alejandro Erlich-Oliva, Gustavo Beytelmann and Astor Piazzolla (Argentina); Egberto Gismonti (Brazil); Maurice Ohana and Edith Canat de Chizy (France); Guido Donati (Italy); and Vasco Martins (Cape Verde).
After Bruno Pizzamiglio's death, on the 18th August 1997, his colleagues decided to go on as a trio of viola, double bass and piano. With this line-up, Opus Ensemble has played works dedicated to them by António Victorino d’Almeida, Laurent Filipe, Sérgio Azevedo, Clotilde Rosa and Eurico Carrapatoso (Portugal); Gérard Massias (France); Alejandro Erlich-Oliva and Fernando Altube (Argentina) and Vasco Martins (Cape Verde).
In August 2005, Opus Ensemble was distinguished by the Portuguese Ministry of Culture with the Cultural Medal Award and since then the group includes the oboist Pedro Ribeiro, reassuming its original form as a quartet.
The discography of Opus Ensemble has been released on EMI (His Master’s Voice, Angel, EMI Classics), Numérica, BMG Ariola (RCA), PolyGram, Portugalsom and Strauss.
A permanent fixture in Opus Ensemble's career is the inclusion of Portuguese music in all their concerts, contributing therefore for the international promotion of our culture.
