Program Notes
The sound for this piece was first imagined as an interweaving of melodies and ornaments in a modal environment. Although it doesn't contain a reference to a specific musical tradition, it nods to music with melodic roots - including Western music from the past, as well as music from further east. The name Salema - from a small fishing village in the Algarve - points to this gaze into the distance, perhaps glimpsing outlines of faraway places.
