Lino Guerreiro (b. 1977, Tavira, Portugal) is a Portuguese composer, educator, and researcher focused on music for wind and percussion instruments. He began formal music studies at 19 and completed the 8th-grade saxophone diploma at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa, while also studying composition with Daniel Schvetz.
He holds a Licentiate in Composition (2008) from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML), where he studied with Carlos Caires, Christopher Bochmann, José Luís Ferreira and Sérgio Azevedo. In 2012, he completed two master’s degrees at ESML: one in Composition (with António Pinho Vargas) and one in Music Education (with António Pinho Vargas, Carlos Marecos, and Francisco Cardoso). He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music and Musicology at the University of Évora, supervised by Eduardo Lopes. His research explores how digital technology reshapes composition, performance, and music education.
Since 2008, Guerreiro has taught Analysis, Composition Techniques, and Chamber Music at the Conservatório de Música D. Dinis (Odivelas) and, since 2012, at the Escola Profissional da Metropolitana, where he was also Pedagogical Director (2020–2023).
His work includes chamber, orchestral, and educational music, with an emphasis on winds and percussion. His music has been performed by ensembles such as Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, and ARTEMSAX, and published by AVA, Arpejo Editora, MIC.PT, and SCOMEGNA. He co-authored The Educational Saxophone (João Pedro Silva), and the article Principles of the Composer-Producer: Technology in Composition Teaching in the 21st Century (Eduardo Lopes). He is also artistic director of mixEnsemble, dedicated to contemporary music.

Biography

Lino Guerreiro (b. 1977, Tavira, Portugal) is a Portuguese composer, pedagogue, and researcher whose work focuses primarily on wind and percussion music. His artistic and academic career reflects a rigorous engagement with contemporary musical language, pedagogy, and performance practice. Guerreiro began his formal musical studies relatively late, at age nineteen, at the Conservatório Regional de Setúbal, continuing at the Conservatório Regional de Torres Vedras. He completed the 8th-grade diploma in saxophone performance at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa, studying composition with Daniel Schvetz.
He holds a Licentiate degree in Composition (2008) from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (ESML), where he studied under Carlos Caires, Christopher Bochmann, José Luís Ferreira and Sérgio Azevedo. In 2012, he earned two master’s degrees from ESML: one in Music (Composition), supervised by António Pinho Vargas, and another in Music Education, with an emphasis on composition pedagogy, mentored by António Pinho Vargas, Carlos Marecos, and Francisco Cardoso. Currently, Guerreiro is pursuing a Doctorate in Music and Musicology at the School of Arts, University of Évora, under the supervision of Professor Eduardo Lopes. His research project, titled The Composer in the Digital Age: from Practice to Pedagogy, explores the impact of digital technologies on contemporary musical creation, emphasizing the aesthetic and methodological diversity that characterizes 21st-century composition. The study critically examines essential competencies for today’s composers, the overlapping roles of composer, producer, and performer, and the relevance of traditional pedagogical models in an increasingly technological landscape. By drawing parallels between contemporary compositional practice and evolving pedagogical approaches, the research aims to offer new perspectives on creative processes, performance, and music education in the digital age.
Professionally, Guerreiro holds long-standing teaching positions at the Escola Profissional da Metropolitana (since 2012) and the Conservatório de Música D. Dinis in Odivelas (since 2008), where he teaches Analysis, Composition Techniques, and Chamber Music. From 2020 to 2023, he served as Pedagogical Director of the Escola Profissional da Metropolitana. A prolific and versatile composer, Guerreiro’s oeuvre spans chamber, orchestral, and pedagogical repertoire, with particular emphasis on wind and percussion instruments. His compositions have been performed by some of Portugal’s leading ensembles, including the Banda Sinfónica Portuguesa, the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, and the acclaimed saxophone quartet ARTEMSAX. His music is published by prominent national and international publishers such as AVA Musical Editions, Arpejo Editora, MIC.PT, and SCOMEGNA Edizioni Musicali, reflecting both the diversity and international reach of his output. In 2017, Guerreiro was jointly awarded the prestigious Prémio Carlos Paredes alongside ARTEMSAX for their collaborative album Projeto Michel Giacometti, which exemplifies his commitment to bridging Portuguese musical heritage with contemporary compositional language.
In addition to his compositional work, Guerreiro co-authored the pedagogical volume O Saxofone Pedagógico with João Pedro Silva, contributing to modern methodologies in saxophone instruction. He has also coauthored the article Principles of the Composer-Producer: Technology in Composition Teaching in the 21st Century with Eduardo Lopes, examining the transformative role of technology in contemporary composition pedagogy. Furthermore, Guerreiro serves as the artistic director of mixEnsemble, a project dedicated to promoting the performance and dissemination of contemporary music. Guerreiro’s scholarly and artistic endeavors firmly establish him as a leading figure in Portuguese contemporary music, particularly noted for advancing repertoire and pedagogy for wind and percussion instruments.
