Activities of the composers published by the MIC.PT

On June 8, at the concert entitled Portugal Hoje (Portugal Today) at the Casa da Música in Porto, the audience will have the opportunity to listen to the premiere of the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra by Clotilde Rosa (1930-2017) – over 16 years after the creation of this work, in 2003. Clotilde Rosa – composer published by the MIC.PT – was the musical avant-garde pioneer in Portugal. Her catalogue of works encompasses around 110 compositions: chamber and orchestral music, an opera, a ballet and didactic pieces – various still awaiting their first public performances. In her music the composer hasn't followed any established code, freely using a symbiosis of different techniques – from serialism to repetitive minimalism, with aleatoric approaches. She reinvented the contemporary language in her own way. Clotilde Rosa's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra will be premiered by the British pianist Jonathan Ayerst, with the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música conducted by Pedro Neves. The programme of this concert will also include the music by António Pinho Vargas and Pedro Amaral.

The piece Cansó (2007) for soprano and seven instruments by Eduardo Luís Patriarca is included in the concert programme by the Contemporary Music Group at the University of Minho. These performances will be taking place on June 10 in Porto, Gondomar and Braga. Another work by this composer published by the MIC.PT – Broken (2019) for piano – makes part of the recital by the pianist Ana Telles dedicated to the memory of the composer José Luís Ferreira (1973-2018). The programme of this recital, premiered on May 31 at the O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon during the Música Viva 2019 Festival, includes works by various other composers published by the MIC.PT: Bruno Gabirro, Christopher Bochmann, Jaime Reis, João Madureira and Miguel Azguime. Additionally, in the near future the flutist Morgana Patriarca together with the Contemporary Music Group at the University of Minho, will  premiere Eduardo Luís Patriarca's new piece for solo flute and ensemble, entitled What the little bird told her (date and venue to be announced).

Memórias de Viana – anos depois… is the title of the performance, which will take place on June 24 at the Sá de Miranda Municipal Theatre in Viana do Castelo. It's organised to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the premiere at this venue of the work Músicas de Villaiana – coros oceânicos (2008-09) by Cândido Lima. The programme of the event, resulting from an idea by the Arte no Tempo association, elaborated by this composer published by the MIC.PT and by Diana Ferreira, has in the centre the performance of the work A Arca do Poeta – Alberto Caeiro para as crianças (2018), by the ARTEA String Orchestra, VianaVocale Junior Choir and under the baton of Javier Viceiroda. A Arca do Poeta originates in the famous Fernando Pessoas' ark, where the poet kept his literary treasures; the subtitle, Alberto Caeiro para as crianças (Alberto Caeiro for Children), has origin in the great poem O Guardador de Rebanhos by Pessoas' heteronym Alberto Caeiro, and in the poetical component of children 's imagination within the ten selected poems" – says Cândido Lima.

The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by António Pinho Vargas is included in the programme of the performance entitled Portugal Hoje (Portugal Today), which will be taking place on June 8 at the Casa da Música in Porto. The work by this composer published by the MIC.PT will be performed by Tamila Kharambura, Ukrainian violinist who premiered the Concerto for Violin in 2016 at the CCB in Lisbon, and by the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música under the ba-ton of Pedro Neves. Every year the Estado da Nação (State of the Nation) presents at this concert cycle the most stimulating music created in Portugal, reuniting composers from various generations. The performance will be pre-ceded with a Round Table, moderated by António Jorge Pacheco, at the Cibermúsica space at the Casa da Música, with the participation of António Pinho Vargas and Pedro Amaral. The work Scherzi (2015), by the latter composer published by the MIC.PT, will be performed in the opening of the concert Portugal Hoje.

The electroacoustic, 8-channnel work La Mer Émeraude (2018) by João Pedro Oliveira has been distinguished with the Second Prize at the Electroacoustic Music International Competition organised by the Societé Internationalle de Musique Electroacoustique (SIME). Another piece by this composer published by the MIC.PT – Dark Energy (2018), commissioned by the Contracello Duo – has been selected and awarded in the context of the Call for Electroacoustic Works 2019, organised by the rmn editions label; this work will be shortly released on a CD by the rmn. Additionally – João Pedro Oliveira's work Full Moon (2018) for trombone solo was premiered by Rocco Rescigno at the Risuonanze 2019 Festival in Udine (Italy); his piece Iris (2000) was performed at the Reencontros 21 at the Casa da Música in Porto on June 2; the programme of the Circutos Contemporâneos Concert Series in Belo Horizonte (Brasil) includes the composer's work Storms composed in .... (June 7); and on June 14 the work Angel Rock (2011) will be performed at the 2nd Brazilian Percussion Congress at the Conservatoire of Music in Belo Horizonte.

Persistência (Persistence) is the title of the pro-gramme composed by Amílcar Vasques-Dias for the 2nd CriaSons Festival, whose next concert will be taking place on June 16 at the São Vicente Church in Évora. This repertoire includes two pieces by this composer published by the MIC.PT Pranto (1984-88) and Coro da Primavera – Canção de José Afonso (1981) –, the world premier of the work Vanfarra (2019) by Edward Luiz Ayres d'Abreu (commission by the CriaSons Festival) and the music by: Louis Andriessen, Misha Mengelberg and Klas Torstensson. "The programme of this concerts familiarises the Portuguese audience with the Orkest de Volharding, created in 1972, in Amsterdam, by Louis Andriessen. Constituted of 13 musicians with clas-sical education but also experienced in jazz, rock, pop and improvisation, the Orkest's instrumental set had the sui generis characteristics: flute / piccolo, three saxophones, horn, three trumpets, three trombones, double bass and piano. It was a provocative alternative for the ostentatious «state symbol»: of the great and heavy Dutch classical-romantic orchestra" – reveals Amílcar Vasques-Dias.

Fluxus, Transitional Flow (2013) for viola and electronics is the piece by Jaime Reis, which makes part of the concert programme by the GMCL – Lisbon Contemporary Music Group conducted by Vasco Pearce de Azevedo. The performance will take place on June 19 at the Contemporary Art Centre in Castelo Branco (Portugal). Also this month, this composer published by the MIC.PT will make a presentation entitled Improvisation and indetermination in the musical practice of Emmanuel Nunes, at the Congress by the Portuguese Anthropology Association. This event will be taking place between June 4-7 in Lisbon. Additionally, on June 11, Jaime Reis will give a Composition Masterclass for the students of com-plementary education attending the discipline of Composition Analysis and Techniques, as well as for the college students from the Composition course. The Master-class is organised at the at the Artistic School of the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Conservatoire in Aveiro (Portugal). In the interview given to the MIC.PT in 2016 Jaime Reis defends that "education needs to be continuous in any form, throughout the entire life".

Vinte e quatro (1997) for 24 guitars and Annuntiatio (2019) for wind orchestra and percussion, are the two works by Paulo Bastos, which will be premiered this month – the first one at the Três Pontes Unified Educational Theatre in São Paulo (Brazil), by the Guri Santa Marcelina Guitar Camerata conducted by Thales Vieira Maestre; and the second one on June 22 at the Circo Theatre in Braga, by the Young Musicians' Wind and Percussion Orchestra of the Minho University conducted by Vítor Matos. "I wrote «Vinte e quatro» in 1997. In the piece there are four groups of guitars – two with major technical difficulty and two more simple" – says this composer published by the MIC.PT in the work's programme note. And he continues: "Belonging to a relatively experimental period in my production, this work personally reflects some irreverence and risk present in the distant 1990s". Also this month, the Jost Costa Duo (Yseult Jost & Domingos Costa · four hand piano) will give two concerts, whose programme includes Paulo Bastos' work Sou já do que fui (2019) – on June 18 at the Casa da Música in Porto and on June 21 at the Adelina Caravana Auditorium in Braga.

The premiere of the new work – Um Leve Tremor – by Christopher Bochmann will take place on June 16 at the Belém Arts Centre in Lisbon. This composer published by the MIC.PT has composed the piece to mark the Centenary of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, being celebrated in 2019. The programme of this concert will also include two works by Ludwig van Beethoven. The music will be performed by the OSJ – Youth Symphony Orchestra, by the Choir of the Lisbon Gregorian Institute, with the soloists: Armando Possante (baritone), Francisco Lima Santos (violin), Pedro Gomes Silva (cello) and João Barata (piano); and under the baton of Christopher Bochmann. "The presence of the OSJ – Youth Symphony Orchestra at the Celebrations of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen's Centenary is particularly symbolic and significant, representing a unique moment for the orchestra. The world premiere of Christopher Bochmann's work based on the poetry by Sophia will emblematically mark this special homage by the Youth Symphony Orchestra" – reveal the event's organisers.

The work Suite Raiana (2019), on traditional melodies from the Beira Baixa region, for clarinet and string quartet, by Fernando C. Lapa, was premiered by the João Roiz Ensemble on June 2, at the Cine-Teatro Avenida in Castelo Branco. Another piece by this composer published by the MIC.PT – Suite Doiro (2010), for two guitars – makes part of the concert, New Talents, taking place at the Rivoli Theatre in Porto. It will be performed by the two guitarists: Rita Barbosa e Hugo Simões. Still this month, Fernando C. Lapa's music will be presented in the context of the concerts by the Paris Guitare Quartet (June 7-9; Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia and Braga). His another piece Canção dos adultos (for the poem by Manuel António Pina), for voices, violin and piano, makes part of the performance Coisas que não há que há by the Teatro do Frio and Coro Lira conducted by Raquel Couto. It'll be presented on June 29 at the Teatro de Vila Real; it includes the music by various other Portuguese composers: Alfredo Teixeira, Eurico Carrapatoso, Pedro Santos, Nuno da Rocha, Tomás Marques, Ângela da Ponte, Sara Ross, Fábio Videira and Sérgio Azevedo.

Os Contos do Oboé (2017) for oboe and piano, is the work by Ricardo Matosinhos, making part of the recital Portuguese Perspectives by Minji Kwon (piano) and Courtney Miller (oboe). This programme, which also includes the music of António Fragoso, Eurico Carrapatoso, Maurice Ravel and Robert Schumann, will be presented on June 15 at the Evangeliumshalle Marburg-Wehrda (Geramny). This recital follows the release of the CD by these two musicians, and which is dedicated to the music by Portuguese composers. Ricardo Matosinhos – composer published by the MIC.PT and horn player – has worked with the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, Orquestra do Norte, Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos and the Remix Ensemble Casa da Música, among others. In the framework of composition he is author of educational materials for horn, as well as of compositions for diverse instrumental sets. Various of his works have been recognised and distinguished at national and international competitions.

Mes Ententes pour 4 Personnages (2012) for saxophone quartet and electronics, Orbital Shift Variations in Space (2018) for four marimbas and Le Feu Qui Dort (2008) for string quartet, are the three pieces by Miguel Azguime make part of the programme of the Extraordinary Quartets Cycle. It'll be taking place on June 21, 22, 29 at the O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon and include the participation of the Saxophone Quartet composed of Alvaro Collao, Rodrigo Vila, Henrique Portovedo and Pedro Bittencourt (June 21), the Drumming – Marimba Quartet (June 22) and the Mato-sinhos String Quartet (June 29). The Extraordinary Quartets Cycle makes part of the Lisbon Festivities 2019. Another piece by this composer published by the MIC.PT – Déscriptions de la Matière (2016) for piano and elec-tronics – was performed by Elsa Silva on June 1 at the Reencontros 21 Cycle (Casa da Música, Porto).

The piece Smart-alienation (2016) for flexible ensemble, electronics and video by Igor C. Silva will be performed in the context of the project Phasing Bug Sequences by the ReConvert Duo (Lorenzo Colombo and Roberto Maqueda), on June 16 at the MS Stubnitz venue in Hamburg (Germany). Another piece by this composer published by the MIC.PT – Static on my fingers (2017) for group of improvisers, electronics and video – will be performed by the Saxophone Quartet (Alvaro Collao, Rodrigo Vila, Henrique Portovedo & Pedro Bittencourt), in the context of the Extraordinary Quartets Cycle (June 21, O'culto da Ajuda). "I believe that the opening of the expressive and aesthetic limits in music creation is an indispensable attitude when it comes to the systematisation of one’s own music discourse. From the moment when a composer seeks incisively (or at times almost obsessively!) for a determined sound universe, appearing to him/her as an adequate music material for his/her compositional practice, it becomes inevitable that the music discourse gains new strength" – said Igor C. Silva in the MIC.PT Interview from 2015.

The opera Nunguém & Todo-o-Mundo, a lyrical and touristic farce around Gil Vicente (2018), by Daniel Moreira – composer published by the MIC.PT –, and with libreto by Edward Luiz Ayres d'Abreu, will be presented on June 22 at the Trindade Theatre in Lisbon. The work will be oriented by João Terleira (tenor), Teresa Nunes (soprano), the Choir of the Music Conservatoire in Porto and the MPMP Ensemble (clarinet, cello, piano, Portuguese guitar, accordion and electronics), under the direction of Jan Wierzba. In the programme note the creators of the opera reveal that “this project offers an opera performance based on the texts by Gil Vicente and travel literature from the 16th century until the present, and a humorous reflection on the virtues and problems of tourism nowadays. What can we learn from the outsiders who used to visit the Portuguese cities centuries ago? What similarities and diferences can be associated with our present reality?"

Towards Ambiguity in Immersive Audio Experiences is the title of the presentation, which Pedro Rebelo – composer published by the MIC.PT –, together with Michael McKnight (Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast), will give in the context of the International Computer Music Conference in New York (June 16-23). "I see contemporary music practices as part of the broader framework within the sonic arts. The aim is to overturn prejudices associated with supposed levels of erudition in determined manners of presenting music. In practice, there is a generation of creators feeling comfortable in a concert hall, a warehouse developing an installation, programming an application for smartphone, a DJ set in an alternative club, or working with a community in a participative project, or still, simply making public interventions. The art of sound encompasses all of this" – said Pedro Rebelo in the MIC.PT Interview from 2016.
Composition & Spatialisation

The registration for the Intensive Course on Electroacoustic Composition and Spatialisation, taking place between July 22 and 26 at the O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon, is open until June 30. It will be led by the three composers published by the MIC.PT: António Ferreira, António de Sousa Dias and Miguel Azguime. At this course the participants can benefit from the broad experience of the tutors, aesthetic pluralism and the logistics / technology available at the O'culto da Ajuda, with its Loudspeaker Orchestra composed of 40 elements. This instrument for sonic diffusion gives the course's students excellent conditions for musical and compositional practice. A maximum number of 12 participants will be admitted for the course, which in its final will have a concert presenting the works developed by the students.
Infinite Blue: concert / conference
tribute to José Luís Ferreira

Infinito Azul (Infinite Blue) is the title of the project by the pianist Ana Telles, paying tribute to the composer published by the MIC.PT – José Luís Ferreira (1973-2018). This month it will be presented at the Garcia de Resende Theatre in Évora on June 15 (concert) and 16 (conference around the concert). "Infinito Azul is more than a homage" – says the pianist in the programme note. And she continues: "It's a collective way to keep José Luís with us, exploring some musical «hints» which he wanted to explore and communicating them within the language which is our own and which unconditionally unites us, despite the time and space borders". The programme of the performance, also with the participation of Jaime Reis (electronics), includes the music by: Eurico Carrapatoso, Christopher Bochmann, João Madureira, Eduardo Luís Patriarca, Miguel Azguime, João Nascimento, Jean Sébastien Béreau, Jaime Reis, Bruno Gabirro; and by José Luís Ferreira.

It will be taking place on June 21, 22 and 29 at the O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon. This project aims at presenting the potential of the musical sets, where the interaction between the four instrumentalists / performers creates a unique sonic environment and tension. During this cycle it will be thus possible to hear and appreciate the Saxophone Quartet composed of Alvaro Collao, Rodrigo Vila, Henrique Portovedo & Pedro Bittencourt (June 21); the Drumming – Marimba Quartet (June 22) and the Matosinhos String Quartet (June 29). The programme of the concerts is composed of art and research, 20th and 21st century music, including various pieces by the composers published by the MIC.PT: António Ferreira (premiere of a new string quartet), António Pinho Vargas (Monodia – Quasi un Requiem, for string quartet [1993]), Igor C. Silva (Static on my Fingers, for group of improvisers and video [2017]), Miguel Azguime (Mes Ententes pour 4 Personnages, for saxophone quartet and electronics [2012]; Orbital Shift Variations in Space, for four marimbas [2018]; Le Feu Qui Dort, for string quartet [2008]); as well as the music by: Daniel Bernardes (premiere of a new work), Luís Tinoco (Short Cuts, version for two vibraphones and two marimbas [2004-5]; String Quartet [1995]) and Nuno Côrte-Real (Monumentum, for string quartet [2009]).
