DANIEL MARTINHO In Focus oN THE MIC.PT IN June
Daniel Martinho, composer published by the MIC.PT who this year celebrates his 30th anniversary, responded to the MIC.PT Questionnaire/Interview, in June published in our In Focus section.
After having attended the Espinho Music Academy in 2006 he entered the ESMAE in Porto. There he studied composition and had the opportunity to work with Carlos Guedes, Dimitris Andrikopoulos, Eugénio Amorim and Fernando C. Lapa. He also attended the seminars and particular lessons with Klaas de Vries, Magnus Lindberg, Jonathan Harvey, Helmut Lachenmann, Vic Hoyland and Ricardo Climent. Posteriorly he joined the Master's Degree course in Composition and Music Theory at the ESMAE. In 2010 he was nominated Young Composer in Residence at the Casa da Música where two of his works were premiered: Antologia do Tempo 2. Ritual – fluxo contínuo and Antologia do Tempo 3. Apogeu. Daniel Martinho also works as professor, teaching various disciplines such as Introduction to Composition and Composition Techniques. He also teaches Classical Guitar and writes music for theatre, as well as arrangements for different instrumental ensembles.
As the composer reveals in one of the answers to the MIC.PT Questionnaire/Interview: "...my language aims at a musical syntax similar to the one in tonal music, but using quite different processes and rules. Essentially, I intend to have one or various gravitational centres (...), and a set of other surrounding harmonic structures. In this approach every structure reveals a determined level of attraction (...) in relation to each other and to the central pole(s). For this effect I frequently resort to the techniques used by the composers of the (...) spectral music school".

Tradition and New Music
During this edition of Música Hoje (Music Today) we propose Portuguese works creating a connection between traditional and new music. We will thus present pieces by various Portuguese contemporary composers who intend to point out some paths for the reinvention of the fado and Portuguese guitar. In this context, among various examples, the programme will include the premiere recording of Momentos-Memórias II (1984-2014) by Cândido Lima, which was realized during the concert Tradition and New Music last year in October in Poland. It was recommended for this occasion by the MIC.PT.
