IVAN MOODY IN FOCUS ON MIC.PT IN APRIL
On the occasion of the 50th birthday of Ivan Moody, this month in the In Focus section we publish a Questionnaire / Interview with this composer, conductor and musicologist. The spirituality of the Orthodox Church, to which he belongs, as well as Eastern liturgical chant, have been fundamental influences on his music, which has been performed and broadcast throughout the world, and recorded on prestigious labels such as Hyperion, ECM, Telarc, Warner Classics and Sony Classical. "I have been inevitably categorizes as a «holy minimalist»”, says Ivan Moody, “…but apart from being a composer who writes a great deal of choral music and is inspired by the Christian tradition, I don’t recognize myself in that classification. My music has changed over the course of the years, readmitting, after a period of «austerity», more complex harmony and more fluid structures… (…). I don’t believe in the idea of musical evolution, only in that of change.”
Significant amongst his most recent projects are Fioriture for the pianist Paul Barnes, and Qohelet, a large-scale work for the Italian ensemble De Labyrintho; he is currently working on commissions for the flautist Monika Streitová and the BBC Singers, amongst others. Formerly a researcher at CESEM – Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Ivan Moody is currently Professor of Church Music at the University of Eastern Finland. He is also a protopresbyter of the Orthodox Church (Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople) and Chairman of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music. As a musicologist he has published articles on aspects of sacred music, on the music of Serbia and Bulgaria, and on contemporary composers such as Górecki, Gubaidulina, Pärt, Schnittke and Tavener. His recently completed book on modernism and Orthodox spirituality will be published in 2014.

This collection integrates the Series of Didactic Scores by Portuguese 20th and 21st century composers, intended for music teachers and students, as well as developed, published and distributed online by the MIC.PT. For more information please visit the MIC.PT online catalogue of Didactic Scores.

IAMIC Conference, Tradition and new music, Call for Papers
The theme of the next IAMIC (International Association of Music Information Centres) Conference, Tradition and New Music, which will be taking place in October in the context of the ISCM World Music Days Festival in Wroclaw, is closely linked to the 200th anniversary of Oskar Kolberg (1814-90), Polish ethnographer, folklorist and composer. In this sense the IAMIC announces a call for papers around the theme of tradition in the context of new music: in what ways tradition is present in contemporary music – not only classical contemporary, but also in other genres of today’s musical culture?
Until April 21 the MIC.PT, IAMIC member, is open to receive proposals from researchers interested in reflecting on this subject in the Portuguese context. The abstracts in English, of presentations with planned duration of around 20 minutes, should not surpass 200 characters. After the preselection made by the MIC.PT, the chosen abstracts will be sent to the conference organizers (until April 30). The list of papers and speeches to be presented during the IAMIC Conference will be announced by the end of May. Contribute with your ideas for the presence of Portuguese music during the IAMIC Conference!
