ÁLVARO SALAZAR "IN FOCUS" ON MIC.PT IN SEPTEMBER
In September the “In Focus” section of the mic.pt is dedicated to Álvaro Salazar, composer, conductor and musicologist, whose work constitutes a point of reference in Portuguese contemporary culture and whose work will be highlighted at the Música Viva 2012 Festival. Born in Porto in 1938, Álvaro Salazar was one of the first Portuguese composers to carry out a specialized investigation in what concerns electroacoustic music. In 1965 he decided to destroy all the works he had presented until that point, having considered his language incoherent and out-dated. Since then his music has presented a particular taste for textures, in which sound objects are sculpted by silence. Although he has been frequently classified as a serialist composer his catalogue (after 1965) does not contain any dodecaphonic work. The influences on his musical grammar include the Second Viennese School, but also Edgar Varése, Morton Feldman and Franco Donatoni, among others. In 1978 he founded the Oficina Musical, ensemble dedicated to the study and promotion of new music. As conductor Álvaro Salazar gave first performances in Portugal and around the world of such significant authors as Janáček, Ives, Webern, Varèse, Eisler, Feldman, Ligeti, among many others.

MÚSICA VIVA 2012 FESTIVAL – GIVING VOICE!
The 18th edition of the Música Viva Festival entitled “Giving Voice!” will be taking place in Lisbon at two different venues and timelines – September 18 to 23 at the Belém Art Centre and from October 1 to 10 at the Goethe-Institut in Lisbon. The programme will be devoted, in its essence, to new Portuguese creation, with the focus on the relations of music with technology.
Counting with the excellence and complicity of an eminent variety of artists and participants, without the generosity of whom it would not be possible to realize this year this event, the Festival’s programme will include debates, 7 concerts and an "excessive" sound installation, Sound Walk, presenting 60 works, among which 40 are by Portuguese composers and with 15 world-premiere performances. The highlight will be given to the music of Constança Capdeville (for her 75th anniversary and 20 years after her passing) and to the music of Álvaro Salazar.
