VIRGÍLIO MELO "IN FOCUS" ON MIC.PT IN JANUARY
The mic.pt begins the New Year with “In Focus” dedicated to Virgílio Melo, composer, teacher, musicologist and critic, who in 2011 celebrated his 50th anniversary. His musical path, somewhat eclectic, was strongly influenced by 5 personalities: Macário Santiago Kastner’s humanistic dimension, Constança Capdeville’s sympathetic anarchy, the intellectual rigour of Emmanuel Nunes, the oriental spirit of Yoshihisa Taïra and finally by Rémy Stricker’s analytical approach. His music can be characterized by a polysemic discourse, which integrates harmonic dimensions supported by conceptual universes distinct from the European tonal tradition, at the same time experimenting with the open form and electronic means and giving emphasis to religious inspiration. Regarding the technique his music possesses three dimensions – modal, serial and spectral. As musicologists and critic Virgílio Melo has worked with various publishers on specialist publications as well as on other of more general character, namely for the Público journal, Colóquio/Artes and Arte Musical magazines, on various concert programmes for the Gulbenkian Foundation and the São Carlos National Theatre as well as on the series of “Portuguese Contemporary Composers” (“Compositores Portugueses Contemporâneos”). His reviews, substantiated in a subjective manner, on the one hand include the context surrounding a concert and on the other carry out a pedagogical role towards the public.
