Evocación was written in March 1997 for Sofia Norton. Its title is a reference to the poem "Evocación de Silves" by the poet king of Seville Al-Mu'tamid (reigned 1068-1091), who was dethroned and exiled to Morocco by the Berber Almoravids.
His nostalgic evocation was written in Arabic and translated into Spanish by Emilio García Gomez in "Poemas"
"Well, Abu Bakr,
greet my home place in Silves
and ask the people there
if, as I think, they still remember me."
The use of percussion in "Evocación" is intended to suggest Moroccan classical music; in fact the piece could be described as an evocation of an evocation: a poem by an Arab king speaking of Portugal, translated into Spanish, then into English, and finally into music.
