Born in Lisbon 1971, he took his degree in composition at Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon, where he studied with António Pinho Vargas and Christopher Bochmann. He also studied with Franco Donatoni at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Sienna (1995), with York Höller at the Musikhochschule Köln (1997-2000, sponsored by Centro Nacional de Cultura), and with Ivan Fedele at the Conservatoire National de Région Strasbourg (2000-2003). João Madureira was awarded in October 1998 the ACARTE / Maria Madalena Azeredo Perdigão prize of the Gulbenkian Foundation.

João Madureira had his works performed in Germany, England, France, Italy, Spain, Croacia and Portugal. His compositions have been commissioned by institutions as Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Culturgest, Expo’98, Centro Cultural de Belém, IPPAR, Casa da Música, Teatro da Cornucópia, Teatro Nacional de São João / Companhia de Teatro .lilástico, Portuguese Republic Presidency, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, and have ben performed in various festivals by interpreters as Nuno Vieira de Almeida, Sílvia Mateus, Luís Miguel Cintra, Orchestrutopica, Remix Ensemble, NRW Art Ensemble, Jeff Cohen, Luís Madureira, João Vasco Almeida, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Youth Symphonic Orchestra, Grupo de Música Contemporãnea de Lisboa, Silvio Gualda, among others.

João Madureira teaches composition at the Escola Superior de Música in Lisbon and at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo in Oporto.
